Environment

Many American Muslims are at the forefront of the environmental movement, inspired by the Qur'an and Islamic tradition, which place great emphasis on nature and mankind's stewardship of the earth.   As the Prophet (peace be upon him) has said: ""The world is green and beautiful and God has appointed you as His stewards over it. He sees how you acquit yourselves."  In Islam, all of creation, including plants, animals, mountains, forests and rivers, have a sacred spiritual element to their existence and thus deserving of respect and care.

Therefore, we support strong environmental protections and will fight to protect and improve our country's major environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act and CERCLA or Superfund. These and other laws have made our rivers and waterways safe again, reduced harmful air pollution and revitalized previously contaminated sites, including in our inner cities.

We also recognize the danger of climate change and the absolute need for national and global action to stem further damage to the environment.  This means stemming the pollution that is contributing to climate change and making the investments needed to move our economy to one based on clean and renewable energy.
